3D PRINTING & THE NEXT 10 YEARS
As leading 3D printing specialists in Johannesburg, it’s only natural that we look forward a little and make predictions about what to expect from our industry over the next decade or so, and we have to say, that our industry is shaping up for a run of making history.
Additive manufacturing (which is what 3D printing is) is taking hold of nearly all aspects of human life, and it is still very much in its infancy. Here are some of the biggest predictions about the future of 3D printing:
THE FUTURE OF CONCRETE MANUFACTURING
One of the most exciting developments we are seeing even now is the use of 3D printing-like processes for infrastructure and building… except that with 3D printing, there is no actual building involved, so manufacturing would be a better term.
This means houses, businesses, entire structures, even bridges will soon be ‘manufactured’ in a fraction of the time and at much less of a cost than we are currently used to.
STREAMLINING DESIGN TO MARKET
Creating, designing, prototyping, and mass-producing new products is only going to get simpler and more refined with 3D printing as the tech continues to evolve. This will most certainly impact those markets concerned with supply and demand.
COMMONPLACE CUSTOM MANUFACTURING
Besides how easy 3D printing will make things for manufacturers, it will give consumers quite a bit more freedom themselves. At some point, just about everyone will have access to not only 3D printers, but the skills needed to make designs for them.
By this point, custom-made creations, whether they be shoes or cutlery, will become the norm for anyone with even a hint of creativity.
MORE MATERIALS: MORE APPLICATIONS
This one I find most exciting, because it is anybody’s guess what these new materials might end up being. Currently plastics are the most widely used, but additive manufacturing can incorporate metal, even gold or silver.
We mentioned the possibility of widespread concrete manufacturing above and how it would impact infrastructure. Imagine what a new material could do for the medicine, aviation, or even space industry.
